How do you tighten eyeglasses?

Tips And Tricks

Eyeglasses that are loose-fitting can cause a variety of issues. They may not sit properly on your face, require constant adjustment, or even cause discomfort. This is why it’s important to know how to tighten your eyeglasses properly.

Why do glasses become loose?

It’s actually quite common for eyeglasses to become loose, especially over time. And common reasons as to why this happens include…

● General wear and tear.

● Screws coming loose or falling out.

● The arms of your glasses bending.

● Environmental factors, such as heat, causing the materials in the glasses to expand or contract!

Methods to Tighten Eyeglasses

If your glasses have become loose, don’t worry! There are plenty of methods to tighten them. Just remember that glasses can be more delicate than they look. So be gentle and avoid forcing them if you feel resistance.

1. Adjust the nose piece

If you’re noticing that your glasses often slide down your nose, the issue may be with the nose piece. And the good news is, many nose pieces can be tightened by simply nudging them.

Grasp your glasses in your hand, with the lenses facing outward. Then use your thumb and your index finger to gently adjust the nose piece. If it’s fitting too loosely, you’ll need to bend it so that the top part of the nose piece is facing further towards where your nose will go and further away from the lens.

Once you make the adjustments, try your glasses on and assess how you feel. If your eyeglasses now feel uneven, you’ll need to repeat the process on the other side. And if it feels too tight, you’ll need to reverse the process a bit.

2. Tighten the screws

One of the most common issues that cause eyeglasses to fit incorrectly is that the screws that hold the frames together have become loose. But thankfully, this is an easy fix!

Tighten the screws

You just have to use a small screwdriver to turn the screws clockwise until they’re tight again. And if you don’t have an appropriately sized screwdriver for this task, you can purchase an eyeglasses repair kit in order to obtain one. These are sold in many drug stores!

3. Bend the arms

If your glasses are loose around the ears, you can tighten the arms for a better fit. With metal frames this can be quite easy, depending on the flexibility of the exact material. And you may be able to gently push the ends of the arms into a tighter position, by pressing them down and/or in.

Bend the frame arms

Plastic frames can be tightened in the same way, but only after warming the material. You can use the heat from a hairdryer for this, or hold your glasses under warm water for about a minute!

4. Take the glasses to an optician

If you don’t feel comfortable tightening your glasses at home, you can always take them to an optician for professional adjustment. This ensures that you don’t accidentally break the frames, and that you end up with a high-quality fit at the end of the process.
